Always verify: State OSHA rules change. This guide reflects requirements as of 2025. Verify current standards with your state agency or at OSHA.gov before making compliance decisions.

Federal OSHA applies to all employers

Georgia has no State Plan — federal OSHA has jurisdiction over both private and public sector employers. This distinguishes Georgia from states like North Carolina and Tennessee, which have comprehensive State Plans. OSHA enforces workplace safety through Area Offices in Atlanta East, Atlanta West, and Savannah.

OSHA 10 requirement

Georgia has no statewide OSHA 10 card requirement for construction workers. Project-specific and contractual requirements are common, particularly on government-funded construction projects.

Construction activity

Georgia has significant construction activity, particularly in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Federal OSHA construction standards (29 CFR Part 1926) apply in full. OSHA's Atlanta offices are active in construction enforcement.

Heat illness

Georgia's climate creates meaningful heat illness risk for outdoor workers during summer months. Federal OSHA enforces heat illness prevention through the General Duty Clause. No Georgia-specific heat standard exists.

Poultry and food processing

Georgia has a large poultry processing industry. These facilities face specific OSHA enforcement attention for ergonomic hazards, chemical exposures (chlorine-based sanitizers), and respiratory hazards. OSHA has conducted targeted enforcement in this sector nationally.

Workers' compensation

Georgia has a mandatory workers' compensation system for most employers with three or more employees. Workers' comp and OSHA are separate systems — a compensable injury may also be an OSHA recordable incident.
