Guards are not optional

Guards on grinders, circular saws, and other power tools exist to contain fragments and protect from contact with moving parts. Never remove a guard to make a cut easier. If the guard prevents the cut you're trying to make, you're using the wrong tool or the wrong approach.

Pre-use inspection

Before using any power tool: check the cord for cuts, fraying, or damage. Check the plug — replace two-prong plugs with three-prong grounded plugs. Check the tool body for cracks. Verify the guard is in place and functioning. Test the trigger and switch.

Angle grinders

Angle grinders cause more serious injuries than almost any other hand-held power tool. Always use the correct disc for the material and the rated RPM. Use two hands. Wear a face shield over safety glasses — not just safety glasses. Keep bystanders out of the plane of the disc.

Electrical safety

Use GFCI protection on all power tools in wet or damp locations. Never carry a tool by its cord. Never yank the cord to unplug — grip the plug. Keep cords out of walkways. Inspect extension cords before use — replace any with damaged insulation.

Discussion question

What power tools are we using today, and has everyone using them been trained on the specific tool — not just power tools in general?

Documentation Reminder

Record this meeting: date, topic ("Power Tool Safety"), names of attendees, and facilitator. A signed attendance sheet filed with your safety records is your training documentation. OSHA treats documented safety meetings as evidence of good faith.
