Why it matters

Back injuries from lifting are the most common workplace injury in most industries. Many are cumulative — they develop over time from repeated stress, not a single incident. Good technique on every lift protects you over the long term, not just today.

Before you lift

Check the weight. If it's over 50 lbs, use a mechanical assist or get a second person. Check your path — know where you're putting it down before you pick it up. Clear the path of any obstacles.

Lifting technique

Get close to the load. Feet shoulder-width apart. Bend at the hips and knees — not the waist. Keep your back straight. Grip the load firmly. Lift with your legs. Keep the load close to your body. Don't twist — turn your whole body by moving your feet.

When not to lift manually

Use a cart, dolly, or hand truck for anything heavy or awkward. Use a pallet jack for palletized loads. Never let schedule pressure push you into a manual lift that should be mechanical.

Discussion question

What loads in this work area should have a team-lift or mechanical assist requirement that we don't currently enforce?

Documentation Reminder

Record this meeting: date, topic ("Safe Lifting Techniques"), names of attendees, and facilitator. A sign-in sheet filed with your safety records is your proof of training. OSHA considers documented safety meetings as evidence of good faith.
